On September 7, 2002 I went to Point Pleasant, West Virginia with my friend Mark to explore the areas where there were Mothman sightings. I first heard of Mothman while working with Mark at Nationwide. He told me creepy stories about some of the things that he and his friends witnessed in the TNT Area of Point Pleasant. The TNT Area is really part of the McClintic Wildlife Management Area. Mark told me that during World War II the Army stored chemicals in camoflagued domes there. Back in the late 1960's there were several mothman sightings in this area.

It is easy to find the TNT Area, it is really close to the Mason County Fairgrounds. We did sort of get lost once. We turned right on this one road instead of turning left into the TNT area, but it was still creepy...it was very isolated and quiet out there. Unfortunately, between the sun and the flash on my camera all the pictures I took look bright and non-creepy. Just imagine them all just a little more eerie and you'll be able to see what I did!

After exploring for a few minutes we turned the truck around and headed for the TNT area. There are two pictures of the road heading into this area: One from my view (the driver's side) and one from Mark's side. Mark took the second picture from the passenger seat so he could lean out the window and take the picture without all the bug spots on my windshield! :) But there weren't too many dead bug spots in my picture afterall!

All of the roads leading back to the domes had been blocked off with guardrails or gates. Mark and I thought about walking back to them, but decided not to since we didn't have anything to defend ourselves with. It wasn't that we were scared about finding the Mothman, but we were scared about what kind of people might be back there. Mark's friends Brian, Brenda, and John all talked about rumors of cult or satanist activities taking place back at the domes. Also, my friend Jeremy from Milton, WV told me that he and a friend went into some of the "igloos" that people had broken into. Inside they found where someone had built an old fire, and had spread the ashes into the shape of a pentagram. He's also heard that a lot of devil worshipping goes on there. Mark and I probably would have been OK going back there during the day, but why take the chance?! We decided to wait until we had a larger group to explore with.

One of the guardrails had some stuff about Mothman spraypainted on it. I took the picture from the truck so it didn't turn out very clear. I wanted to find that same guardrail on the way back to get a better picture, but I missed it. But if you look closely at the picture in the dropdown box you can kind of make out the word "Mothman"

There were also lots of rounded areas cut out of the overgrown forest. Were these old roads, or are they just there so people can turn their cars around or park there?

Another strange thing was the "Groundwater Treatment Facility". Mark said that this building hasn't always had a sign on it, but it's always had the fence and barbed wire. Maybe it is a water treatment facility, but it's a very strange one. It's a really tall, narrow building, and it has this really tall, narrow garage door. It seems weird that the door is so tall. It definitely doesn't look like any water treatment facility that I've ever seen, but maybe we're just being paranoid.

With the exception of an old, abandoned house, the Groundwater Treatment Facility was the only building back there. I can understand why that house was abandoned, it was out in the middle of nowhere!

There was also a shooting range in the TNT area. Mark, his mom, and his brother told me that about 10 years ago someone was murdered at that shooting range. They shot him and threw the body under a bridge that's at the shooting range.

Mark and I also drove past a very scummy, green pond. It was by far the ugliest pond I have ever seen. Even though it was all covered with a bright green film, there was one person out there fishing. I wouldn't want to eat any fish caught from that pond!

My trip to the TNT area wasn't terrifying, but it was just one of those places where you get a creepy kind of feeling. It was probably all those stories I heard. I think it would be really eerie at night, and hopefully sometime I'll get to go there when it's dark...but I won't ever go there by myself, just in case!
