The Old Town Hall is located at 32 Derby Square in Salem, Massachusetts.
The Old Town Hall was built in 1816. It served as the city headquarters until the new City Hall was constructed in 1836.
The Old Town Hall is supposedly haunted. There has been reported poltergeist activity in and around the building since it was constructed. Objects have been seen moving around on their own, and some have even claimed to see a ghostly figure in the windows at night.
In November 2006, I received an e-mail from Tony Hall with an observation about one of my photos:
I have circled what appears to be a man. At first, I thought I was imagining it, but I had my friend take a look and I didn't tell him what I saw...he picked it right out. You can see what appears to be a man dressed in a suit top. You can surely see his shoulder, and a sort of beard, eyes, and a hair on his head.
It looks like it would be a residual haunting because it seems as if he's just looking outside like he would do any other day while he was at work.
In May 2007 I received an e-mail from Barbara Gambichler about her experiences at the Old Town Hall:
My daughter, age 22 years old, felt the presence of something when we went to see the re-enactment of Bridget Bishop, during Haunted Happenings, in The Old Town Hall (Salem, MA). What I would like to know, what is the story of the four ghosts that walk on Front Street, behind The Old Town Hall?
I've been to Salem three times, and on some nights these four ghosts are active. One is a woman who is not friendly, wearing a brown dress, probably from the late 1700's or 1800's. My 22 year old daughter had a physical encounter with the woman in the brown dress, in the afternoon, forgetting I warned her about Front street. My girlfriend and I have seen and felt the presence, but no physical contact. On every tour we took, I asked the same question to each tour guide, no one has a history of these four ghosts.
If you've experienced anything odd at the Old Town Hall, please send me an e-mail and I'll add your story to the site!
