Ouija Board Tips

using the ouija board

I get a lot of questions from website visitors asking me for tips and advice on using the ouija board. This is honestly a difficult question to answer since there's no real concrete way on how to use the board and get it to work - I think it's just luck! But here are a few tips I was able to come up with (please keep in mind that I do not believe all the contributed tips listed on this page are true...just do/believe what you think is best):

  • Have an open mind. If you believe the board isn't going to work, it probably won't.

  • Be serious, but not too serious. You don't want to giggle and laugh hysterically, but it is OK to have fun with it. Some people even think laughter attracts spirits/ghosts.

  • Limit the number of people playing. Try not to have more than 4-5 people touching the planchette at once. If you have more than 4-5 people who want to try it, just take turns.

  • We usually light a candle or have a small flashlight on. This is mainly so we can see what the board is spelling out, but it also adds an eerie effect and helps put you in the ouija mood!

  • Don't try to contact anyone specifically. A good question to ask is "Is there anyone in the room with us now?". You shouldn't fully believe that the spirit you're talking with is really who they say they are.

  • Don't fully believe/act upon anything the board spells out. In my opinion, this is the only dangerous part of using an ouija board. Think about it - this is a board game...why in the world would you take anything it spells out as 100% true?! Just have fun with it, don't look at it as some super powerful tool.

  • Gwen Vetter, a website visitor, told me that burning a sage scented candle while using the board will keep away evil spirits. Sage is believed to have a cleansing property, so this makes sense. Thanks so much for sharing this tip, Gwen!

  • Some people claim that saying a protective prayer/spell is a good way to get results. Here are some prayers my friend Michelle found in a book that are supposed to help with the ouija board:

Invocation for Creating a Sacred Space (say before using the board):

    Dear Spirit,
As I light these candles, bless this sacred place.
Let the light of their flames radiate love and protection to all four corners of this room.
I ask at this time that any negative energies be released from this space.
With a bath of white light, I ask that it be cleansed and neutralized.
Turn my dwelling into a sanctuary.
May it be the foundation for your teachings and the inspiration for my higher perceptions.

Invocation for Protection (another one to say before using the board):

    Dear Spirit,
As I sit with you now, I open my heart.
I surround myself with the love and light of your protection.
I release any negativity that I have picked up throughout the day so that I speak to the universe with the purity of my soul.
I ask that any energy (information, healing) be given for my absolute good.
Dismiss now all energies that are not of the Highest and Greatest source.
As I bathe in your grace, I will listen to your resounding voice within me.
I will be true to my hear and your gentle guidance.
(you can follow this with a moment of appreciation for the universe...)

Invocation for Closing Your Connection and Your Sacred Space (say this one after you've finished using the board):

    Dear Spirit,
Thank you for sharing this sacred time with me.
I appreciate the flow of energy I have just experienced.
I will use it for my highest good.
As I blow out these candles, I close this sacred space, and ask that your protection surround me wherever I go today.

I've never tried using any of these prayers, so if they work please let me know! In December 2005 I received an e-mail from Maria, a website visitor, who said they worked for her - you can read her story by clicking here.

Trish Fogle, a website visitor, sent me a GREAT list of tips:
  • If you are worried about attracting bad spirits, you should make a write of protection and read it outloud, or use one that is given with the booklet that comes with the Ouija, if it has one. Something ideal would be like, "I invite those spirits who are only for my highest good. Any spirits who come through who are NOT for my highest good are to be absorbed into the white light of protection, harming none."

  • You should envision a white light of protection. Also, candles are good, preferably white candles, but don't light too many, because it may attract too many spirits and you may not be able to have an uninterrupted conversation with one spirit because other spirits will be attracted to the light and will want to come through to talk. Burning Sage is also good.

  • Always be in a good frame of mind, and be positive while using the Ouija. If not, you can attract unwanted negative spirits.

  • Do not use drugs or alcohol while using the Ouija.

  • Always be respectful while talking to spirits, even if they seem hostile or unfriendly. If you curse or are disrespectful to them, it is just going to egg them on and/or make them angry, therefore you may not be able to get rid of them. If there is a spirit that you are afraid of, or a spirit who keeps interrupting messages from other spirits to be rude or insistant that you speak with them, you can politely tell the spirit that you do not wish to speak to them at that time and ask if it is alright for you to talk to them later. If they say no, and are still instistant, you can try to mentally block them either by saying your Spirit Guide's name in your head over and over, or you can end the session and move the planchette to "Goodbye" and say, "I release you to go back to where you came from."

  • Always remember that spirits do not always tell the truth. Tricksters, who are often liars but mostly harmless will sometimes lie about even the smallest things. Mostly they like to joke around and not be serious. If you ask them questions they will give you bogus answers. This does not always mean they are bad spirits, just mischievous ones. Mostly they are just annoying. Spirit Guides will not lie. As far as I know, other spirits cannot pretend they are your Spirit Guide, although sometimes while talking to your SG the message can be interrupted by another spirit (usually a trickster) and won't make sense. The planchette usually feels different too. Chance and I always recognize right away that it's no longer our SG we are talking to. If you're unsure of who you're talking to, ask their name. If you do not wish to speak to that spirit, politely ask if you can talk to whatever spirit you were talking to before.

Trish also said:

Most of my experiences with the Ouija have been great and are fun. In my opinion there is no reason to fear the Ouija, as long as you are sensible and make it clear that you are only willing to speak to those who are for YOUR HIGHEST GOOD ONLY, HARMING NONE. I am greatful that I am now aware of my SG. It makes me feel good to know that I have a protector and someone to watch over me. My conversations with my SG are always wonderful and heartfelt. If there are people who don't know anything about Spirit Guides, I recommend doing research on the web and reading about them. It can change your life and have a very positive outcome.

LaCocoLee sent me a list of helpful tips too:
  1. ALWAYS move the planchette to GOODBYE when you're done talking. Otherwise, the spirits can and probably will inhabit your house freely until you do so.

  2. NEVER ask a spirit to do anything outside the ouija board, such as make a sound or move an object. This gives them the right to leave the board and roam around freely, doing anything they want, which is almost all the time a bad thing.

  3. NEVER give full trust to somebody on the ouija board. They can and probably will trick you if you do this into asking them to do something outside the ouija board.

  4. If a spirit moves the planchette to anything that even looks like it might be spelling out the word hell, demon, devil, or anything having to do with sinister nature, SAY GOODBYE. Do NOT allow them to finish the word, NO MATTER WHAT. Even if you think they're a spirit guide. If you allow them to spell out the sinister word, they ARE evil, and WILL try to harm you terribly. Take my advice, DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO SPELL THE WORD.

  5. Drawing a circle around you and the ouija board can help protect you from evil spirits, though no guarantee.

Liz W. also sent me some information that might be helpful if a spirit you're talking to keeps going to the number 666:

It comes to my attention that for some reason people are very afraid off the number 666. Maybe it would be helpful for them to know that it's a fairly meaningless number. Sure, people commonly believe it to be "the sign of the beast, (Revelation 13:18)" or the Devil. This simply isn't correct. "666" is a mistranslated number, which is understandable as old Hebrew is difficult to translate. The real number in question is "616." Even then, when it's talked about as being a sign of the beast, the beast is Nero. Don't get me wrong, Nero wasn't a particularly nice man (burning Christians seems pretty naughty - especially since they wasted a perfectly good fire by not bringing marshmallows/disturbingly weird joke), but he's not the Devil.

That information can be found in pretty standard books by scholars of Christianity. I found it in Why Do Catholics Do That: A Guide to the Teachings and Practices of the Catholic Church by Kevin Orlin Johnson, Ph. D. (p 258 in the Ballantine Books 1995 edition). While I don't profess to be Catholic at this point in my life, I do believe that he's more than likely correct about the number in question.

That said, if a spirit is using "666" it's probably safe to assume that they don't really know what they're talking about OR that they're pulling a twisted joke. Furthermore, (and I haven't caught this in the stories on your site yet, but have read it in the past) people who talk about "666" coming up in their readings and then talk about the Devil being in their board REALLY lack credibility with the (apparently) not common enough knowledge about 666.

I received even more helpful tips from Heath, a website visitor, in April 2005:

  1. If the planchette goes to all 4 corners, end the session. It is an "evil spirit".

  2. If the planchette moves off the board, the spirit is "freed" from the board. In other words, the spirit is in the "house" or area... But I'm not sure about this, because it is already around, being that you contacted it. So this one confuses me.

  3. If the planchette starts to create a figure 8 pattern, end the session.

  4. To end a session, simply say good bye, and FLIP the planchette and the board over. Most times we don't say goodbye, we just flip it.

  5. The more people that are touching the planchette, the faster it will go, because it has more energy to feed off of.

In August 2005, I received an e-mail from Julia Huddle with even more tips:

  1. Use a ring of salt around the circle of users. This is supposed to protect and contain the group away from spirits.

  2. A piece of pure silver on the board also helps.

  3. For positive results, a positive state of mind is required. Alike energy attracts.

  4. You should not use a board if you're over tired, ill or weakened in any way. Unfriendly spirits will take advantage of this.

In September 2005, I received even more tips from Ariel Spear, another website visitor:

  1. Placing a pure silver coin on the board will help keep away unpure, "evil" entities.

  2. Making your letters in a circle also helps to keep positive entities within the board.

  3. Do not let the spirit travel fully through the alphabet (IE. a-b-c-d-e etc.) or through the numbers. If it does this, flip the board...the spirit is negative and wishes to escape.

  4. Spirits like flowers and water, they like water because it represents movement, which in turn represents life, death, and the afterlife.

  5. When you're starting out, first always try to find out who your spirit guide is.

  6. Sometimes the spirits don't speak your language, so it is important to write down what they are saying in case it comes out in an odd kind of order, IE "jared" might come out as "jrade" or something like that.

On October 1, 2005 I received an e-mail from Blaque with some great ouija tips (although, I wouldn't recommend using blood!):

When you play ouija, be sure to light white candles and place them around the room. Then draw a large pentagram in blood on each of the four walls. Pray, cleanse, do what you will. Look up ways to bless your board and rid evil spirits from your home...all the help you need is on the net, you just have to find it!

I also received an e-mail from Jennifer Feuerstein in October 2005, with her ouija tips:

I'd also ask the younger users of the Ouija to be careful, not only are they more inexperienced but they also tend to be more sensitive. Also, a tip, stay in control of the board and remember to tell the spirits "thank you" when you're done. You'd hate to be bothered and not thanked for the time. I also probably wouldn't ask it anything about your death if you really don't want to worry about it later. It can lead to a little thing called "self-fulfilling" prophecy. Basically means: the board said something about a car crash on a foggy night - you start thinking about it driving in the fog, stop paying attention, and hit the tree.... Take it all with a grain of salt and have fun.

On a side note, have you noticed that with most of the "bad experiences" people didn't like the Ouija game or were expecting something, like a sign. Those who were expecting nothing usually had good experiences...

On October 27, 2005 I received an e-mail from Maddy Larsen with one of her ouija tips:

I would recommend using the Ouija board outside - it usually works much better for people if they've never used one before. Also, if you really believe something evil will happen, it won't be stuck inside your house.

In December 2005 I received an e-mail from Casey Nelson with some more tips:

I have had many experiences with spirits and what I have learned is that 'hell' and 'the devil' do not exist, but if you are getting bad spirits possessing your board, saying the Lord's Prayer and then burning the board has usually worked for me. Or you could try lighting a match and then dropping it inside the glass that you have used and wait for the match to burn out. If you have used just a piece of paper as a board then it helps if you tear it up and burn it inside the glass you have used.

I also received an ouija tip from Lazzyhorse in December 2005:

If a evil spirit/demon/devil has control over an oujia board, flip the planchette over and use it that way.

In January 2006 I received an e-mail from Tammie with her ouija tips:

  1. To get rid of an ouija board, break it into seven pieces and sprinkle with holy water...then bury it!

  2. If you try to burn an ouija board, whoever hears the board scream has 36 hours to live - DO NOT BURN OUIJA BOARDS!!!!!

  3. If using a glass planchette, always cleanse by holding over a burning candle.

  4. Never play alone.

  5. Never play in a graveyard.

  6. Sometimes an evil spirit can permanently inhabit a board so no other spirits can contact.

  7. Purposely move the planchette around in a circle on the board for a moment or two to get it "warmed up".

  8. Always say a prayer to welcome the spirit.

I also received an e-mail from Owen Haydn in January 2006, with a HUGE list of ouija tips. To see his suggestions, click here (the list was just too big to add to this page!).

In April 2006 I received an e-mail from Crystal with her tip (that I don't necessarily agree with):

My advice to you is to destroy the board. Not only that, but do not buy into the crap about you cannot close the door. A spirit attempts to feed off your emotions. That's why you hear about people with ouija boards and other magics getting posessed, while people who are devoted to God remain safe. You need to do a couple of simple things. Get a Bible, say the Lord's prayer, then ask for forgiveness and protection. You may also want to sprinkle salt around your house in a circle for purification. Salt is well known as a purifier. That easily.

In June 2006 I received an e-mail from Joseph with a couple ouija tips:

I find that if you write down what you want to happen during time you spend talking to the spirits on a piece of paper and then burn it on a candle it helps you communicate with the spirits. Also, incense works just as good as sage.

In December 2006 I received an e-mail from an anonymous visitor with more ouija board tips:

I have had COUNTLESS experiences with Ouija Boards. After reading some stories about them, I have made a list of tips on what to do and what not to do with them.

  1. DO NOT PLAY ALONE!!! Evil spirits can harm you if you are alone. I know how to play alone, and I am not going to tell. Don't look it up and don't do it. Please!

  2. NEVER HAVE LIGHTS ON! Lights hurt spirits (from my friend). If you have lights on you are harming them. A candle or two is fine, but nothing else.

  3. NEVER ASK IF THE SPIRIT IS EVIL OR NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am serious about this, asking if a spirit is evil or not is only bringing you into trouble. Evil spirits WILL lie. They can haunt you if you do ask this. Me and my friends never ask. I think that we just don't want to know the answer.

  4. GET TO KNOW THE SPIRIT! This might sound strange, but I always get to know the spirit that I am talking to before I start asking serious questions. Sure, they may lie, but they may not. I ask questions like "What is your name?", "How old are you?", "What year did you die?", and of course, "Do you like us talking to you?".

  5. Ask how many spirits are in the room. It is just interesting to know. If there are over 2 spirits, then after each question say "All contribute to the board" - this way, each will help in answering your question. This will also help the "main" spirit have more energy so he or she could answer.

  6. When you say goodbye, PUT THE BOARD AWAY. I say this because leaving the board out can invite more spirits to enter, even if you do say goodbye because once you say "Hello", the "door" to the other world is nearly impossible to close. So when you say goodbye, put the board back in its box and in another room. If more spirits DO come, they won't be in your room at night.

  7. NEVER LEAVE THE PORTAL OPEN! In number 6, I said that the portal is nearly impossible to close. If you say goodbye, you basically still have it open, but only like half-way (also from my friend). You never want to leave the portal open and not say goodbye. The spirits will roam and stay in the room. And probably never leave. Even if you are leaving for a 2 minute break, say goodbye, then ask for the same spirit if you wish, when you come back. Unfortunately, my friends and I learned this the hard way.

  8. DON'T ANGER THE SPIRIT! I think that this one is pretty self-explanatory.

  9. NEVER TRY TO TAKE VIDEOS OF SPIRITS WHILE PLAYING OUIJA. Seances are fine, but while playing Ouija, the videos won't show anything, other than what you see through the screen.

  10. HAVE FUN! Many are afraid of Ouija, mainly because they hear these stories about how some spirit moved things or touched people. I have gotten touched on my feet and blown on from spirits. I wasn't afraid. Half of the stories out there are made up. Don't be afraid to try Ouija. It is probably the greatest thing I have ever did. It is probably the most fun thing too.

In January 2007 I received the following tips from an anonymous website visitor:

If you throw away the ouija board then you are still being followed with a curse on you. What you need to do is get a new Ouija board, say goodbye to the spirit, and give the old board away for free. That is the only way. If you still do not feel safe you should get a priest or someone to bless your house.

I also received the following tips from Frank Barcenas in January 2007:

I was reading the stories on your site and noticed that some of the people are rather confused as to what a Spirit Guide is. They often ask the spirit if they are a spirit guide, and of course the spirit will answer yes to make you think that is what they are, but here are details on Spirit Guides and other such beings. I hope you post them so your readers can tell the difference. I have been professionally trained as a psychic and here are my findings. My site is http://www.frankbarcenas.net if you would like to read more about my psychic adventures. I do not use the Ouija Board, but I hope these tips help your readers.

"Guides and Other Such Beings"

Before we get started, let's get out of the way some of the tell tale signs that let you know you are not talking with a Spirit Guide. Spirit Guides will never tell you how to live your life. Spirit Guides are not mean and they are not evil. Spirit Guides will never hurt you or your feelings. ALL Spirit Guides are from the Light. It is rare for Spirit Guides to be humanized, but they do have senses of humor. Spirit Guides will never tell you things to scare you, nor will they try to possess you or break things. Spirit Guides are powerful, but Angels are more powerful. Spirit Guides do not get angry, they have been trained to ignore our pettiness and they are NON JUDGEMENTAL beings. They have learned to view our Realm with out contempt.

There are many beings sent to help you along the way. Here is a list of them:

Animal Totems: These are special animals that guide and protect. Yes, once an animal crosses into the Spirit Realm of the Light, it can communicate the way any Spirit can. Sometimes our pets from this life and other lives will show up to help us along the way.

Primary Spirit Guide: This is the Primary Spirit Guide that knows all about your life and you. He or She used to be a person just like you and me and they have jurisdiction over the other Spirit Guides. They will bring in new Guides and dismiss Guides as they see fit. At any given time, we can have from one Spirit Guide all the way up to 30 Spirit Guides helping us in life. These Spirit Guides are "aware" of us always. They reside in Heaven and can be here and there at the same time. Sometimes they never leave our side. The Primary Spirit Guide is empathically aware of their charge and calls for help when we need it. That is if you give them permission to call for help, they will.

Spirit Guides: These are other Spirits that used to be people like you and me that come to help us on anything. They provide guidance, not the answers, but nudgings to show us the way. They communicate in many ways, through telepathy, visions, ideas, etc. They have their ways of making us aware of stuff. These beings can change along the way, so we might have a few or many at any given time. They will never tell us how to live our lives, but rather they will provide loving advice and Spiritual Guidance. All of these beings come from the Light.

Guardian Angels: This is a term used for Spirit Guides and our Personal team of Angels. Spirit Guides take on a role as Guardian Angels, and our protecting Angels do this as well.

Angels: These are powerful beings that protect people of all religions. Most people have them around even if they don't believe. Angels are unlike Spirits in that their energy does not feel human at all. Rather, their energy feels blissful and joyous and loving. Angels consider us their children to protect because we are the offspring of God. It doesn't matter what form of God you believe in, the Angels are the ones that are sent to answer the prayers and requests. Angels can be funny as well, but they don’t feel having been human like Spirit Guides do. Spirit Guides have traces of having been human.

Arch Angels: Call on the Arch Angel Michael if you run into demons and dark entities. The Angels have the power to dissolve dark entities and can do so You can call on the Arch Angels Metatron, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, etc. etc. Research some angels.

Ascended Masters: These are powerful beings like Jesus Christ, Buddha, Krishna, Mother Mary. They are highly advanced souls with lots of power so they can protect you when you call on Spirits.

God Source: Well, I believe in one God that is everything. But we all have a God Source, this is our main Guide that protects us and Loves us unconditionally. We all have the right to believe in God in every which way that we can, so you are not wrong if you believe in a God and a Goddess, etc. etc. etc. They all send the Angels.

On the opposite side:

The Earthbound Soul: These are people that died that have not gone into the Light. They are rather confused and emotional. These beings act very much like people do. Unlike our Spirit Guides that have transcended the human condition, earthbound Spirits can feel jealousy, love, lust, anger, and other such things. These spirits can become hurtful if you anger them, and its not that they were bad people, its that when they become earthbound spirits, they have a tendancy to go nuts. Its like being in Solitary confinement for some of them. Some people try to help them into the Light, but sometimes its hard to do this.

Dark Spirit or Dark Entity: These are bad. They mean to hurt you and trick you into having them in your life. Truth is, we don't need to have them EVER. They will drive you nuts if you let them. They feed on fear, its like a food to them, so if they succeed in freaking you out, they get fatter. What I do to them is make fun of them. I laugh at them and it takes their power away. They hate anything that has to do with God or Love, or the Light. Most of them plan to never become good, so it's a waste of time trying to reform them into the Light. Believe me, I tried for four years. It doesn't work. These beings want to slip into people's bodies too, so they can tap into the human experience, but as always, they are up to no good.

Demons: These are very dark very powerful evil spirits. They will pretend to be good to try to lure you in, but they have trickery up their sleeve. The Arch Angel Michael or Jesus Christ can banish them, so banish them in their names or call on your protectors. Spirit Guides can't really go up against them because they are too evil, but the Angels and the Ascended Masters can. I know people that can shatter dark spirits to bits, but I have yet to learn how to do this.

These are the usual suspects when you practice Spirit Communication. Always remember to do a prayer before and after. Then call only on Spirits that are 100% of God's Loving Light. The Spirits from the Light only tell the truth and they mean you no harm.

In February 2007 I received some ouija tips from Lora Maddox:

I was reading the oujia stories...the one about the 15 year old girl Nikki. She was saying that she was feeling like she was being followed. Well first of all, not to sound like an ass, but a 15 year old should not be fooling around with an ouija board in the first place. Unless this person is trained and knows what to do, most 15 year olds just think that they're cool and a cool way to contact the dead. Well they can be a cool way to contact the dead, however, you can get yourself into some serious trouble with them if they are not used properly. First of all, it sounds like she did not close the board. If the board was not closed, the best thing to do is to open up another Ouija session to have the board properly closed.

Another thing to do, which most people don't do and it seems so simple, yet I swear to you, it works most of the time: talk to what you think is following you. Tell it to stop. If you are Christian say a prayer. I personally am a Christian, but I absolutely love the paranormal. If after trying to tell it to go away and saying a prayer doesn't work, maybe calling a local priest or preacher? Or even just someone to come and bless your home.

I also received an ouija tip from Sweetpea22569 in February 2007:

A few friends and I were playing with the ouija board. We usually light a candle before starting. We have only used one candle, which is red...

We usually contact someone who isn't so friendly...

We have lately been using a white candle so as to ward off unfriendly spirits...

I'm thinking that Red symbolizes Blood and attracts less friendly spirits.

So my tip is: Don't use red candles.

I received an e-mail with an ouija tip from Louie in June 2007:

Some of these spirits actually need help. So if they say that they can't see, that it is dark where they're at. If we have the courage to get into 'OUIJAing' then we must be ready for everything. Including being ready to help them. In some cases we have to actually order them to head towards the LIGHT at the BRIDGE. That's where everybody's friends and family are awaiting us when we pass on, to help us in the transition. Only thing is some of us are very attached to material things, like our money, our family, our child or baby, or our mate, whichever happens to be the case, and then we hang around way past our time. Then we have trouble trying to head towards where we were supposed to go which is the LIGHT at the BRIDGE. So people, when you see something like this; "I'm in trouble", or "Can't find my way", or "It's too dark here", please help them by encouraging them or even ordering them with authority to go to the LIGHT at the BRIDGE. They will usually go and you will never hear from them again. Only Demons will linger around and hate you for challenging them to reason with faith or God or Jesus. But troubled spirits can be helped.

I also received an e-mail with some ouija tips from Janelle Cudnik in June 2007:

A tip that I don't agree with, and the reason... The tip was under "get to know the spirit," and while I do encourage people to get to know the spirit, I strongly discourage people to ask the spirit when it died. Because some spirits don't know that they are dead, and can get hostile about it. So, I just wanted to give everyone that tip, but you can, and I encourage you to, ask the spirit what year it is. I once talked to a little girl who was from the 1920's!

Another tip is to make a circle of salt around the area the board will be used in, as well as smudge the area [burn sage]. I also say a protection prayer, so that negative spirits don't get in, as well as cast a protective circle [if you know how to do that]. I hope these tips help!

In July 2007 I received an e-mail from Christine Barton with many ouija tips:

Spirits cannot lie unless they are a trickster. Do believe the things that seem believeable, but if what the spirit spells out isn't logical, ignore it, and ask a different question.

NEVER EVER MOVE THE PLANCHETTE TO GOODBYE!!! Never move the planchette at all, period. It will make the spirit very angry and may result in harm.

If you do want to stop talking to the spirit, simply ask it if you can let it go. If it says yes, say thank you, and the spirit will move the planchette to 'goodbye'. If the spirit says no, DO NOT ASK WHY. Simply say okay. Ask it more questions, then after a few minutes, ask it if you can let it go. If the spirit says no, there is obviously more it wants to say.

If you do end up getting scared and wanting to stop talking, immediately turn on the lights, blow out the candles, pick up the planchette, and move it as far as possible away from the ouija board. If it is still near the board, the spirits will still be able to contact you and harm you.

Salt is a barrier for all spirits. Do not pour salt around your circle. If you do, no spirits will be able to get through it to contact you. Pour salt all the way around the room that you are in most of the time, but not the room that you are playing with the oujia board. If you want to get away fromt the ouija board, go into the room you poured the salt in. A spirit will not be able to get through that salt to get to you.

Do not use the ouija board outside. Too many spirits will come and confuse you. Most of the evil spirits are located outside.

Right when you start the ouija board, these are the questions you want to ask first:
Is there anyone present who would like to talk to us?
Are you good or bad?
If they are bad, ask if they can hurt you.
If they say yes, ask if they will hurt you.
If they say yes, then watch what you say.

To get rid of an ouija board for good without having to rip it into 7 peices and sprinkling holy water on it, simply pass it on to someone. Sell it for free. Send it away. Just pass it on. Never use the ouija board at 3:00, 6:00, or midnight. These times are when all the evil spirits are out.

I received the following tips from Patryk R. in August 2007:

I have some helpful tips for playing with an Ouija board:

  1. Say the Lord's Prayer, or make up your own prayer before and after playing with the Ouija Board.
  2. Have no light whatsoever.
  3. If you ask the spirit to show itself, or ask if it's evil, the demon will start attacking your family.
  4. Never bury the Ouija board, or else the place where the board was buried will be cursed.
  5. ALWAYS say goodbye after the session or the spirit will roam your house.

I received the following e-mail from an anonymous visitor in August 2007 with some ouija tips:

A funny little box game? We thought so too. I swear to you, this is NOT JUST A GAME! The things that make the board move stay in your house and affect other loved ones. If you have to do this, as we did, make sure that you send away anything that comes through (you may not see or hear anything right then, or even that night). Make sure as soon as you are done with the board, and while all of you are still there, that you tell any and all spirits to go back to where they came from and to go to the light and rest in peace in heaven. We didn't believe it either folks.

I received the following e-mail from Jordan S. in October 2007 with some ouija tips:

When first establishing connection, only ask "Yes" or "No" questions until a firm connection is evident.

Keep silver on an ouija while in session.

ALWAYS say Goodbye!

When not in use, wrap the board in black silk to prevent spirits from getting through.

I received the following tips from Dan Cayo in November 2007:

  1. Two people minimum - for obvious reasons.
  2. Have an open mind.
  3. Warm up the board by moving the planchette counter clockwise three to five times.
  4. Use guessing games if playing with a skeptic, this will free the mind of the skeptic in order for more accurate information to transpire.
    - Have the skeptic pick a number from 1-10, possibly write it down, repeat the number in their head, and watch as the Ouija board guesses correctly.
    - Have the skeptic ask a yes or no question in their head.
  5. Yes or No questions to help warm the board further.
    - Are you my spirit guide, Yes or No? Is my spirit guide in the room, Yes or No? Asking for a "yes or no" response can streamline the communication process.
  6. After the board becomes "warm", and the planchette seems to be moving more fluently, ask if they have an important message to deliver.
  7. Always say goodbye.

NOTE: If the planchette moves back and forth from N and Z it means the spirit either doesn't know or is confused. If the planchette stops between yes or no, usually on the OUIJA name itself, the spirit does not have an answer for the question asked. However, rewording the question or asking similar questions may help them come to an accurate conclusion.

TIP: Ouija should be considered and utilitzed just as any other form of Instant Messaging. What I mean is, the lack of facial expressions or emoticons open up the door to 'tricksters' or even a spirit just having fun. Such as asking potentially embarassing questions about others in the room could lead to a inaccurate response because the spirit is merely having fun just as you and I would have fun when IMing. To combat this, you can state instructions to the spirit such as navigating to the smiling sun when joking around or to the half moon when being serious as well as being sad. I've seen varieties of ouija boards including homemade ones - I don't see why we couldn't add emoticons to the ouija board in order to get a more accurate line of communication.

Stef B. sent me this tip in December 2007: Try using only one candle, because spirits may get confused if there are too many lights.

Jonathan B. sent me the following tip in January 2008:

A couple of my friends and I were messing around with a ouija, and we somehow contacted one of our recently deceased friends. If by chance you believe you have contacted one of your friends, family members, etc...don't believe it is them until you ask them a few questions that only your core group would know. Such as their number in a sport they played, a good time you had with them, who they were dating when they died, etc. Only then will you know for sure it is who you think it is.

In March 2008, I received the following tips from Emmeli:

The tip that I would like to give you is the safetey questions, as we call them. They're in my story as well, but I thought that it would fit in well under this category.

The questions are:
* Is there anyone with us?
If you have someone with you, proceed with this question:
* Can everyone around the board participate?
These two questions are the most important! Because if the spirit doesn't like someone around the board they can get really angry. The questions after these two come in a random order.
* Can we drink during this session?
* Can we eat during this session? (There is a follow-up qustion to these two and it is: Do we have to ask permission?)
* Can we take breaks for bathroom, snack, smoke etc.?
* Can we ask questions about you? (this is a pretty important question. Some spirits can see it as an invasion on their privacy)
If there are any pets where you are you should ask:
* Can the pets be in the same room during the session? (A friend of mine has a funny story about this. The spirit that came forward had actually been a mouse, and for that reason, he was afraid of their pet snake)

We also turn off all electrical things in the room, such as lamps, computers, cell phones, etc. We also cover all reflective surfaces.

And the one rule that I think should be the most obvious one: Don't EVER ask the spirit to manifest themselves in any way!

In April 2008, I received the following ouija tips from Kyle:

  1. You never ask to speak to a certain spirit; they come to you, as it could upset that spirit or other spirits that you would have to go through to get to the one you wish to speak to.

  2. You never ask a spirit how they died, unless you ask them permission to ask how they have died, as this might upset the spirit.

  3. You are never supposed to ask if a spirit is your spirit guide. Not only will tricksters mess with you and give you false information, but bad spirits, or demons as you call them, may put you in harms way by telling you they are your spirit guides.

  4. NEVER PLAY ALONE! Playing alone makes you more vulnerable to attack, so just don't do it. It may cause you great mental and spiritual termoil.

  5. Don't be stupid...when you sense a spirit is bad, say Goodbye, and the spirit will have no way of getting out of the board to harm you. So please do your research before you start playing with ouija boards, please.

I also received the following tips from Malek S. in April 2008:

  1. When you're on the ouija, you have to keep something in mind: NEVER TRUST ANY SPIRIT WHO IS TALKING TO YOU. You never know if it's a demon/higher spirit/earth bound soul.

  2. You must ALWAYS CALL FOR THE GOOD ONES. Try to say a prayer (not just for religious people). The prayer can be whatever you like, but the best in my view is, "God, send us your angels to protect us from all evil that exists in the borders of the other world. We hope that you may forgive us for any sins we have made in the past and lead us to the right path, and not allow us to be shaken by their screams and terrors for they are weak and you are the infinite power."

  3. PLEASE PEOPLE, IF YOU WANT TO PLAY OUIJA YOU MUST FIRST KNOW THAT IT IS NOT REALLY A GAME. When you play ouija you can have fun because you are socializing with creatures from another dimension. But you should know that you have the power, even though they are scary. You should always assure yourself that you have the power. When you do that, you get them scared because they start understanding that you are in charge.

  4. NEVERRRRR!!! EVERRR!!! TELL A SPIRIT THIS: "I'm in charge here, you must answer me." NEVER! IT WILL MAKE YOU SUFFER THE WORST TORMENT EVER. Only someone of real internal power, who is deeply connected with this world, can show that he has such power...people with such wisdom would never play such a game because it is simply nothing to them. They already have communication power.

  5. Don't play alone; play with at least two or more people with you. One of them should be religious and must carry with him a holy book. He must not participate - he only watches in case anything bad happens. If it does, he must read over your head and in your ears, and also read on the water and throw it in your face. In three cases I was the watcher, and I dealt with two cases of possession. So believe me - if they were without me, those people could have died.

  6. If for any reason while playing you feel a bit sick...all of you must take your hands off the planchette. Flip the glass and the board, and say a prayer asking the angels to make the spirits go away. One that has always worked with me is, "Angels of God, come upon us. Save us from the raging demons. Save us from the possession. Save us from the torment. Don't let the demons touch God's loyal subjects."

  7. Like tip #6...IF FOR ANY REASON, AT ANY TIME, YOU SEE THE GLASS PIECE MOVING AROUND TOO FAST OR TOO MUCH, SAYING WORDS THAT HAVE NO MEANING, FLIP THE GLASS AND THE BOARD AND SAY THE SAME PRAYER.

  8. BIG WORD OF ADVICE: DON'T USE THE OUIJA IN A HOUSE, SPECIALLY IF IT'S AN OLD HOUSE WHICH HASN'T BEEN OWNED BY HUMANS FOR LONG. Demons tend to take these houses as their own since no one is living in them. If you try a prayer and use a ouija board there, you will be possessed without any strong effort from the demon. NEVER PLAY WITH A DEMON ON HIS OWN TURF!

  9. DON'T USE IT WITH YOUR FRIENDS WHO SCARE EASY...THEY TEND TO MAKE THINGS EVEN WORSE. This one time I was with one of my friends who had never tried it before. I had two other friends who are less experienced than me, but they know a lot. When he saw the glass move, he laughed and said stop that. I asked, "What did you expect, it's not a game." He was going to cry because I got shook up a bit when I was playing...something tried to take over me, but it left very fast because I was wearing a silver necklace wich brings me to the next tip.

  10. Believe it or not, SILVER TURNS OUT TO MAKE DEMONS REALLY, REALLY WEAK AND IT IS PAINFUL TO THEM. Kind of like fire to us.

  11. Don't make crosses, crescents, or pentagrams...this stuff brings more demons. Even religious relicts tend to make demons more hostile...
Finally, I would like to say this: IF YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO KEEP YOURSELF FROM JOKING WITH A DEMON, THEN DONT PLAY THE GAME...DO NOT JOKE WITH A DEMON! They laugh and they joke around too, and wait until you like them. And then BAMMMM! They hit you with all they've got. Just keep in mind, when a demon says there is no one around that means there are over two more around, hearing what you say and laughing about how stupid you are. They wait for the right moment to possess the living hell out of you!

People, handle this with respect. Don't show disrespect, even if they are showing it. Just don't get into a demon fight.

Grounded souls don't talk on ouija boards unless they are close to where they were killed and really need your help to get to the light. Otherwise, it is a demon. Some demons are OK and others are bad mf's. Seriously, they don't play around; they are there to take your body, that's all. Others just want to get to know you, maybe just to make a connection or to take over you too! So, just protect yourself and don't allow any of this stuff to happen and you'll be ok.

I also received the following tips from Marcus M. in April 2008:

  1. A spirit guide can't lie to you, but they will probably give you half truths. Example: my grandpa Bule told me his name was Tim. Apparently, Tim is the name he used whenever he owed some money.

  2. If a spirit is making pentagrams, figure 8's, or the like, they are 9/10 times a low level demon, usually an imp. An actual high level demon doesn't need such petty signs.

  3. Don't talk shit to a spirit, unless you can back it up.

  4. Don't manipulate the planchette. If you move it without the spirit's aid, spirits get pissed (unless that was your point all along).

  5. Don't dare a demon to appear. This seems obvious, but some are stupid enough to try it.

In May 2008 I received the following tips from Joanna:

Although I don't condone playing with fire, if people MUST play with the ouija board I want to give you some tips on how to recognize demons and evil entities because this is really something you don't want to play with; the results can be absolutely devastating. Although true demonic posession is relatively rare, many times it involves the ouija board.

A demon's ultimate goal is to posess a human body. It will try and try to trick you by gaining your trust because people need to allow the spirit into their lives in order for it to take a hold by their own free will. Posession isn't spontaneous, it happens in steps. Infestation, oppression, and then finally posession. Whatever you do, NEVER give the spirit permission to show itself. That means don't invite it into your house, don't say you want to see it, don't invite it to do anything. This is how you open the door.

Don't hold a seance or session during the night hours, the reason the demonic like 3 AM is because it is mocking Jesus - 3 AM being the opposite time of Jesus' death. You can still contact spirits in the daytime, its just that night time is likely to attract the demonic. Likewise, the people who tell you to keep it dark, again, evil spirits can't stand the light, so you are protecting yourself by doing it in the light. I wouldn't hold a seance or play with the ouija board at night unless you are a trained, professional medium.

The demonic usually do things backward and unnatural. Such signs of foul-play are moving things, such as your planchette counter-clockwise, spelling words backward, etc. Also, they tend to do things in threes or groups of 6. Three is the number of the Holy Trinity, so the demons use this number to mock the trinity. The most common sign of a demon entering your home will be symbolic, 3 knocks on the door and when you go to the door to answer it, there's nobody there. At least nobody there you can see. Many times the first occurences will be at 3 AM, most common times of year are the Christmas season, Easter season, holy days, and the month of November. Again, manifesting during Holy Days is to mock Christ.

A demon will NOT want to tell you its name, and that is a good way to test it also. But I do think you should have BLESSED holy relics around to protect you. People don't realize the power of the rosary, only the most powerful devils can harm a rosary, as its one of the most powerful relics you can have for protection. It is rare to attract a high devil as there is a hierarchy and usually the lesser demonic spirits will do the initial dirty work. However, revealing its name is the KEY to casting it out. If you are baptized, you definitely have the power to tell the spirit to leave, in the name of Jesus Christ and I would use that power. I don't know about other religions, I'm not saying only Christians can cast out demons, but as a Catholic its the method I am familiar with. However, ALL major religions have exorcism ceremonies. When you identify the spirit, you can command it to leave in the name of God and it has to obey you, this is why you will have a spirit who won't give its name. Don't play with a spirit that won't give its name, now you know why...you won't be able to get rid of it.

Don't listen to people who tell you to fear the spirit, YOU stay in control. You give the spirit way too much power over you, and you don't have to antagonize it, but make sure you decide what to ask. Evil spirits will always lie, and you don't want to mess around with those ones.

Another way you can tell if the spirit is actually a guardian angel or a demonic entity is by telling it to say or proclaim something like, it serves Lord Jesus Christ its master- something positive about God. An evil spirit can't bring itself to say anything positive about God because they hate God.

I can't think of anything more right now, but I'm not trying to be a religious crusader here. I want to share with you knowledge about demonology, this is commonplace knowledge among demonologists in recognizing evil, inhuman, and demonic spirits. This way, when you recognize something is inhuman and preternatural (supernatural for those who don't know is defined as coming from God, preternatural is not from God).

I feel it is a way I can help people attempt to protect themselves from evil spirits, as people are reading your site hopefully for tips. Although I don't condone it, I'd like to see less people unwittingly wreck havoc into their lives; the demonic will resort to tricks to fool you and it won't just hurt you, but potentially harm the people around you. Yes, fear will feed the demonic also, they live to fear you. It's hard to discern spirits without the gift, but those are some accepted general rules about demonology, not something I made up. If you feel plagued by evil, you can always call a paranormal group to check into it first. The Church is careful about performing exorcisms and you have to prove without a doubt first the activity is paranormal, but you can always request a blessing, which is actually a minor exorcism.

Little known fact is that anyone who has been baptized is protected because baptism is a rite of minor exorcism, and the reason spontaneous posession is relatively rare. However, we have free will as people and playing with the ouija and not being careful is the invitation these awful spirits are waiting for to terrorize you. You don't have to be a Christian to ask the spirit if it loves Jesus, its a simple test, obviously only something evil would say something blasphemous about any pious, religious figure.

In June 2008, I received some ouija tips from Heather M.:

I've only used the ouija board once, but it really does work. I would not recommend burning or burying the board - I would just recommend saying goodbye and flipping the board upside down. The first thing you should always do before playing on the ouija board is say a protection prayer like this:

Angel of God,
My Guardian dear,
To whom His love
Commits me here,
Ever this night
be at my side,
To light and guard,
to rule and guide
Amen.

The most important tip of the game is ONLY USE WHITE CANDLES. Do not use black or red candles because if you do, it is said to free the evil demons if the red is used and it is said to free the death omen if you use black. Another tip is if it spells out any of the demon names DO NOT SAY THE NAMES OF THE EVIL SPIRIT BECAUSE SAYING THE NAME CAN GIVE IT THE POWER TO ESCAPE THE BOARD AND POSSESS YOU. When you are done using the game, it is always good to say goodbye to tell the spirit that you are leaving. And also say, "Will anyone come forth and speak?" when you want to contact a spirit. If you want to contact a family member, you should say may I speak to, and the persons full name (first and last...middle doesn't matter, but if said it may work better). If you contact a family member you should say I love you and will miss you after you want to end contact.

I also received an e-mail from T.H. with some tips in June 2008:

I have never played the ouija board in English before, because it has never worked for me in English. I play in Chinese, where we refer to the "spririts" as dish gods, for our pointers are small 3 inch dishes with an arrow drawn on the side to point at the word. A happy face is drawn on the down side of the dish to attract happy gods. Chinese words are written out in a circle, and the words yes, no, right, and wrong are written on the corners. (Our board is homemade). We have a cup of tea and a cup of rice to offer, and we welcome the dish gods with incense. An empty chair is also put out for the spirit to sit in. We put our middle fingers on the dish lightly, and ask if anyone is with us, then move to the word yes. Once they have come, we always ask their age, their gender, and other questions to greet the god. We tell them to take breaks and to drink tea when they have been answering questions for a while. Before asking a question, we always reintroduce ourselves, such as, "Hello, my name is Taylor Hough...." then you ask your question. After a long time, we ask if the god wishes to leave, and if not, we ask more questions. If so, we say thank you, you may leave now. We leave the board sit for a little bit, then we put our hands on the dish again and ask if they are still here. They usually leave, and if not, we ask if they want to stay. If they don't, then we say, sorry, and we allow you to leave.

We almost always receive Chinese dish gods, or spirits, because we ask for them in Chinese. One time we asked in English, therefore leaving us with an English speaking spirit. We have encountered old and young boys and girls, and laughing at their answers always makes them mad. One time they said I would be having a dozen kids when I am older, and my friends immediately started laughing. The pointer started to go crazy, and almosttttt flew off the table. We immediately asked if we have offended him/her, and said sorry immediately. Questioning their knowledge can also anger them. Always remember to be respectful to the spirit/god!!

I received a tip from an anonymous website visitor in July 2008:

I have learned through several experiences with the ouija that if you fasten a PURE SILVER COIN to the pointer in front of the eye, it will protect you against evil spirits. I only learned this because of my unique experiences with the board. I have been physically harmed by the board on two occasions. I have been scratched several times to the point of actual bleeding. I did some research on it, and was told about the coin. Since I started using the coin, I haven't had any more bad experiences. Only good spirits now. I hope this info helps you or anyone that needs it.

I received a tip from Albert in August 2008:

You have probably heard this before, but you need to draw a cross over the board, pour gasoline over it, then burn it. I hope it helps, because spirits are drawn to the board, so if it's burned then it goes away.

I also received a tip from an anonymous website visitor in August 2008:

Do not draw pentagrams or anything in blood - it attracts evil spirits.

I also received a couple tips from Nick Allen in August 2008:

I have found that it is best to keep doors and windows closed when you are currently in an ouija board seesion. Every time that someone has opened the door during a session, a new spirit enters the room. Often times it creates turmoil over the board and just makes it harder to continue to talk to a single spirit.

Another piece of advice is to watch the speed of the planchette. My friends and I have a great time talking to one spirit, but after some time of talking, our spirit guides or the spirit we are talking to will slow down. At one point my spirit guide stopped ALMOST altogether. We weren't even sure if it was talking to us anymore, but when we lit another candle he was moving just enough for us to understand that we were still talking to him. We asked if he was protecting us, and he said yes. We asked LT (Lament Tregs, from Venice) if he wished us to close the board and he said yes. He then put all the energy he had to say goodbye, and it movied really fast. If the planchette moves really slow after moving good, then spirits are fighting over the board. Any good, respectable spirit won't fight with another good spirit to talk to people, so ask the spirit if it wishes you to close the board.

I received a huge list of tips from Andy, a website visitor, in August 2008. Click here to see this list (PDF document). And if you have any questions for Andy, please let me know and I'll forward them on.

I received some tips from Shannon in September 2008:

People need to know that they can be thrown into serious situations with dark spirits if they are not careful. I have never tried incantations, but the candles and darkness make it worse. If they are more peaceful they come out in the light, it wouldn't matter. The darkness tends to draw them near. I am a true believer in the spirit world. I have seen possessions and almost had one myself. Most times the spirits lie, A LOT.

It is also true that if you don't believe, you most likely will be oblivious to the fact that the spirits are talking or doing things around you. On rare occasions, there are people who truly believe and still cannot feel or notice anything. If you're a believer, be wary, for the spirits can still mess with you, even if you are in the presence of a non-believer. Just because you are with people or persons who don't believe doesn't mean you can't or won't get things. Please take my words to heart.

If I think of any additional tips, I'll be sure to post them. Feel free to e-mail me any tips or other ouija questions you might have!
