Mark Robinson sent me the following e-mail about the Feathers Hotel:

The Feathers Hotel is one of many listed, Medieval buildings in Ludlow, Shropshire. The motif of feathers which gave the hotel it's name was the depiction of the badge of the Prince of Wales, who was throned in 1616, and would later become King Charles I. In the 1640's, the building was turned into an inn by one Thomas Jones, who returned to Ludlow after fighting in the King's Army. Finally, in 1863, it was turned into the Feathers Hotel, and is now one of the town's main tourist attractions along with Ludlow Castle.

It is obvious that many ghost stories are abundant in a building such as this. Room 211 is especially famous for a spirit who does not take kindly to female guests, who very often do not get a wink of sleep in the room. One night, a lady guest awoke to find herself been 'dragged' out of bed by her hair by an apparently malevolent ghost. Later on, in the same night, she awoke drenched in water, but strangely, the bed and surroundings remained bone dry. Meanwhile, male guests report a very peaceful nights sleep.

Also, a full bodied apparition of a woman has been seen in the car park of the Hotel, apparently walking 'through' the cars and walls, before vanishing into thin air. This story is all the more interesting when we learn that this spirit is said to be a rare 'living ghost', of a woman who now lives many miles away from Ludlow. She apparently used to walk often through the Hotel's car park, and this been a happy time in her life, often visualizes walking that path to this day. One historian even believes he has found this 'living ghost', and is looking to track her down!

Whatever you may believe, the Feathers Hotel is an interesting and eerie location, and is a living testament to the wonderful Medieval Architecture of the Welsh Border towns.
