The Chillicothe Correctional Institute Cemetery is located on the south side of Larrick Lane in Chillicothe, Ohio (Union Township, Ross County). The coordinates are 39° 21' 58.76" N, 83° 1' 22.73" W.
The Chillicothe Correctional Institute Cemetery is still used for inmate burials. There are rows of marble, rectangular state issued gravestones. With the exception of one "Unknown" stone, all contain names and dates of death. The more recent gravestones also contain birthdates. The cemetery is very well taken care of.
Speaking of the "Unknown" marker, Brian Fields sent me the following information:
"CCI used to be a federal prison and is on the site of the old Camp Sherman: http://www.nps.gov/hocu/html/sherman.html. It could be an old headstone from that era. Also, I work at the prison and one night, while escorting a plumbing crew, we found an old headstone like it under the administration building basement which was being used as a storage area."
VERY interesting information, I'm glad Brian shared it with me!
In June 2006 I received an e-mail from Chris Engel regarding one of the gravestones pictured above:
"I saw that you have a photo of Stephen Vrabel's grave on your site. You might want to note
that Vrabel was executed for the murder of his girlfriend and her (their?) 3 yr old daughter."
A big thanks to Mike Hill for visiting this cemetery with me, and for telling me about it! I was so excited when he told me he knew how to get to this cemetery, prison cemeteries are one of my favorite types to visit!
