Happy Birthday, Ivy Rose

November 4, 2007

On November 4, 2007 I received an e-mail from Catherine about an interesting ouija board experience:

My name is Catherine and I live in Maine. I was at my friend's house one day with a bunch of girls. We were really bored, so I asked Jenna if she had a ouija board, because I had never played one but wanted to. She found her mom's board, which was 40 years old. One girl, Danika, did not want to play so she went and hung out with Jenna's older brother and his friends. So we all sat in a circle at 1:00 in the morning and dimmed the lights low. Among all us girls was my best friend Regan, who is Native American. Her family is all about spirits. So we decided she should start. We told everyone not to pull it themselves because we wanted it to work. Everyone agreed.

Regan: What is the name of the spirit that is with us tonight?

Three of us lightly touched the board. It started moving and we gasped. It went between J and I. Then it moved to V. then Y. The name was Ivy.

Regan: You're name is Ivy, right?
Board: Yes

We decided to just ask questions about boys, like if our boyfriends really liked us or not. Then someone wanted to prove this was a real spirit. I had an idea. I asked everyone if they knew when my birthday was. Regan and Emily said they did. But Jenna, Aimee, and Katie did not. I told the three of them to do it and ask for the digits of my birthday. Jenna asked and messed up the question, and it got confused and just moved along the numbers. I told her to ask again, more clearly. Then it moved to 3....then 15...then 95. I was born on March 15, 1995. They looked at me and asked, "Is it right?" I slowly nodded.

Then it got even more freakier, but fun. Jenna put three fingers behind her back. Only Katie and Jenna knew there were three fingers. Then me, Regan, and Emily asked how many fingers were behind Jenna's back. It said 3. I tried next. I put 7. It said 7. Then Regan did 9, and it slowly went to 6. Then it did a downward swoop to 4. Then an upward swoop to 5. 6-4+5=9. Then we asked for the initials of a boy who likes me. It went to s, then we mesed up. Then again it said s, and someone laughed and messed us up again. Then we tried again and it said s-y. Which were the initials of Seth Yachnin, Danika's [the girl who did not want to play with the board] boyfriend. We gasped. We asked if it was Seth Yachnin at our school. It repeated yes.

So then we asked her if we could google her. She said yes. We asked for her last name, and she said Rose. A few girls went online and typed in Ivy Rose obituary. It came up with a man's name "Wayne Waterbrow," or something like that. It said Ivy Rose was his niece. Emily and I went and asked her if she was related to a man named Wayne Waterbrow. She said yes. Then the girls found Ivy's obituary. It said her birthdate was around November 21, 1912. We asked her if that was her birthday, she said no, then said November 14 1912. We told her we were going to play some games, and we would talk to her tomorrow. She said goodbye.

The next morning we asked for the name of the spirit. It went to F then X. We asked if Ivy was the spirit. It said yes. I asked if she remembered my name. She went to C...A...T, and it started towards H. I told her CAT was enough, since that was my nickname, and she immediately stopped going to H and went back to start. We asked her, since it was almost her birthday, if she wanted us to celebrate it for her. She said yes yes yes. There were a lot more scary moments, but it was freaky how fast it moved. And nobody was pulling it. Katie had a dream and saw Ivy. She had long wavy blonde hair, white skin, and blue eyes. She smiled at Katie and that was the end of her dream. I can't wait to play again!
